About Campus FoodFit

Campus FoodFit helps UC San Diego students find campus meals that fit their budget, their nutrition goals, their dietary preferences and where they are on campus. This beta shows how that would work, using clearly labelled demo meals.

Who built it

Campus FoodFit is an independent student project at UC San Diego. It is not run by UC San Diego or HDH (Housing • Dining • Hospitality).

Built by the Campus FoodFit Development Team.

What the beta can do

  • Search and filter meals by keyword, maximum price, minimum protein, calorie range, dietary tags, venue and meal type.
  • Explain why each meal matched, using only data the meal actually has.
  • When nothing matches, show which filter is blocking results and how many meals you'd see without it. Your filters are never changed for you.
  • List five real dining venues with locations from the UCSD campus map, plus walking directions.

It can't yet show real, current menus. Every meal is a demo (see Data sources).

How ranking works

  1. Hard filters are never relaxed. A meal has to pass every filter you set. If a meal has no price, it can't pass a price limit. Unknown values are never counted as zero.
  2. Unknown isn't zero. Missing values show as “Not available”. When you sort by price, protein or calories, meals missing that value go last.
  3. Best match. If you set a price limit, a protein minimum or a full calorie range, each meal gets a score from 0 to 100. Protein counts most (45%), then price (30%), then calories (25%). Only the targets you actually set are counted. A meal scores higher when:
    • it costs less relative to your budget;
    • it has more protein, up to 1.5× your minimum;
    • its calories are closer to the middle of your range (only when you set both a minimum and a maximum).
A single calorie limit (only a minimum or only a maximum) is a pass/fail filter and doesn't affect the score. The same goes for dietary tags, venue, meal type and keyword.
  4. Default order. With no filters at all, meals are sorted by protein per dollar (grams of protein ÷ price), highest first. Meals missing price or protein go last. Ties go to meals with complete nutrition.
  5. Any remaining ties are broken in a fixed order, so the same search always gives the same list.

Dietary tags are not allergy information. Always confirm allergens with HDH Dining before eating.

Data sources & honesty

Venues — verified

Venue names, addresses and official menu links come from the HDH Dining restaurants page(opens in a new tab). Locations come from the official UC San Diego Campus Map(opens in a new tab). Both were checked on 5 November 2026.

Meals — all demo

Every meal in this beta is a demo. The venues are real, but the dishes, prices and nutrition values are illustrative examples, not actual menu items. Each meal card is marked “Demo meal” and “Real venue · not an actual menu item”.

Why? UC San Diego's website terms(opens in a new tab) say material from official UCSD websites may not be copied, republished or distributed without explicit permission. That includes HDH menus, prices, nutrition and photos. We'll only show real menu data once HDH gives written approval. Until then, we link to the official pages instead.

What the statuses mean

Verified current
A real menu item confirmed against an official source. It's shown as available only if HDH has approved its reuse and its menu date is today (Pacific time). Otherwise it's hidden from results. No meals have this status yet.
Historical
Was on an official menu on a past date. Never shown as currently available.
Unverified
Couldn't be confirmed on the latest check. Hidden from results.
Demo
A made-up example meal at a real venue, used to show how the app works. Every meal in this beta is a demo.

Check before you go

  1. Open HDH Dining Menus & Hours(opens in a new tab) and pick a restaurant.
  2. Choose the date and meal period (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner…).
  3. Open an item's nutrition and allergen info. HDH notes that this information is auto-generated and can't be guaranteed. For allergy questions, contact HDHdietitian@ucsd.edu.

Roadmap (MVP 0.2 — planned, not promised)

  • Ask HDH Dining for permission to show real, dated menus with nutrition.
  • Once approved, replace demo meals with real ones and refresh them every day.
  • Show today's hours and whether a venue is open now.
  • Natural-language search (“high-protein vegetarian lunch under $10 near Revelle”), turned into the same filters you can set by hand.
  • Connect the feedback form so it can actually be submitted.
